Bio/Background

Marietta Shipley recently retired in September 2006 as judge of the Second Circuit Court in Nashville presiding over civil jury and non-jury trials for the past 16 years. For 13 years she also handled family cases in addition to her civil jury trials. During that time she was a leader in promoting mediation in the court system. She has now founded The Mediation Group of Tennessee,LLC, a state-wide network of mediators and arbitrators who will handle all types of mediation and arbitration.
While she was judge she mediated numerous civil settlement conferences as well as providing case management conferences for family cases. She was one of the founders of the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators. She will be president beginning in March 2007.

Mediation Education and Training

Marietta received her JD in 1976 from the Nashville School of Law ; her MAT in 1969 and BA in 1967 from the University of Kansas; She has served as an Assistant at Mediation Training at Judicial College 1994 and 1995. She received her original mediation training with CDR at Stanford University Law School. She received further training from David Strawn in Florida and with Nina Meierding from Pepperdine Strauss Institute at several trainings for judges.
