TAPM: Empowering Mediators and Promoting Conflict Resolution
The Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators (TAPM) supports mediators and promotes mediation as a vital practice to resolve conflicts within and beyond the legal system. Our focus is on facilitated problem-solving and effective communication in a confidential, supportive process, empowering individuals to create mutually agreeable solutions.
Our History
Mediation in Tennessee began with the establishment of the Nashville Area Association of Family Mediators (NAAFM) in 1988. Founded by non-attorneys, NAAFM initiated a court mediation project through Judge Marietta Shipley, educated the public on mediation, and provided training in both domestic and civil/commercial mediation.
In the early 1990s, the American Bar Association recognized Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), encouraging attorneys to explore mediation. By 1992, with support across Tennessee, the Mediation Association of Tennessee (MAT) was formed. MAT played a key role in securing the adoption of Rule 31 by the Tennessee Supreme Court in 2001, legitimizing mediation statewide.
In 2006, MAT transformed into the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators (TAPM). Today, TAPM includes attorney and non-attorney mediators specializing in various dispute resolution practices. Our membership spans beyond Tennessee, incorporating fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
